OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique says misinformation about the recent police-involved shooting in Haliburton has been posted on social media.
To ensure the independence and integrity of the SIU investigation into the incident, which left a 73-year-old man dead, Carrique, via Twitter, is asking people to refer to the SIU releases on the case.
The shooting this week made headlines – in part because OPP confirmed the man who died had earlier refused to wear a mask at the Minden Valu Mart where they say he also assaulted an employee.
Police were able to get his licence as he fled that scene – this led them to an Indian Point Road location where the SIU says it’s seized two guns – a semi-automatic rifle and a pistol.
The SIU has also seized the firearms of two OPP officers involved in the case.
Carrique is prohibited from speaking on the case in order to ensure the impartiality of the investigation.
More details as they become available.
