Work on the new Elmvale & District Food Bank facility is moving forward.
A physically distanced groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday.
The new Elmvale & District Food Bank will be located at 62 Yonge St. N. and will address food storage, privacy and accessibility concerns that are present at the current location in the Elmvale Community Hall building.![]()
“We are thrilled to soon have a facility of our own which will permit us to serve the community effectively with storage rooms, interview rooms and comfortable waiting areas for citizens using the food bank,” says Jan Drinkill, Chair of the Elmvale & District Food Bank. “The location will provide ample parking, privacy, convenience for residents of the village of Elmvale and a nearby bus stop for those travelling from outlying communities. Thank you to the Township of Springwater for steering this project to fruition. ”
“The Township is pleased to support the important work the Food Bank is doing in our municipality,” says Mayor Don Allen, Springwater Township. “Food insecurity can happen in any community and during these challenging times, the need only grows stronger. Knowing that there is somewhere to turn if you are struggling to put food on the table can be a lifeline to someone in need.”
Construction on the new facility is expected to be completed in early fall, with occupancy taking place before the busy Thanksgiving season.
Until that time, the Elmvale Food Bank remains open and operational at 35 Queen St. W on Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. with appropriate physical distancing measures in place.
