Over 2,500 meals were served during the 2020 Huron Out of the Cold program.
The winter shelter began in 2017, as a way to bring the region’s homeless population indoors during colder months.
Since its inception, the Goderich Salvation Army has taken over operations from Huron County, and Lieutenant Derek Kerr says the latest edition of the program served 2,585 meals to the region’s homeless, between January 1st and April 15th.
When Out of the Cold concluded for the season, the province reached the heights of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Kerr says the County of Huron helped to find temporary housing for residents of the winter shelter, many in local motels.
Churches in Goderich, according to Kerr, have taken to preparing meals throughout the week for those in need.
