The Spitfires spoiled the Halloween party at the Bayshore.
Thanasi Marentette scored twice and finished with three points as the Windsor Spitfires shelled the Owen Sound Attack 8-0 in Ontario Hockey League action Saturday afternoon at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
This one felt at times like a flashback to the blowout loss at the WFCU the Attack suffered 15 days ago, when the Spitfires blitzed Owen Sound 11-3. That game that seemed a turning point for this Attack team, which had wins in four of and points in five of six games since then — and played in one-goal or tied games in all their third periods, finding ways to win.
Not today.
Windsor continued its domination of Owen Sound this month — improving to 3-0 against the Attack while outscoring them 23-4. Eight-nothing today, 11-3 on Oct. 16 at WFCU Centre, and 4-1 at the Bayshore back on Oct. 3.
The Spitfires fires led 2-0 after the first. 6-0 after the second, when Ryerson Leenders was pulled with just over five minutes to go after allowing six goals on 24 shots.
Mitchell Nouwens entered and made his OHL debut. The 2026 5th-round pick of the Attack stopped 14 of the 16 he faced. The Spitfires got two past him in the third.
Ty Bergeron, Anthony Cristoforo, Bogdan Yakushevksy, Ethan Garden, Grady Spicer and Ty Bergeron also scored for the Spitfires (7-5-2-1). Windsor won its third straight game.
The Attack (6-9-1) had three-game winning and five-gave point streaks end. It was also a sour note to close and otherwise strong homestand for the Attack, which included wins over London Knights, Barrie Colts and Sarnia Sting.
The Spitfires outshot the Attack 38-24 while going 1 for 6 on the power play; Owen Sound finished 0 for 7 and allowed two shorthanded goals against.
Leenders took the loss, while Spitfires goaltender Michael Newlove stopped 24 for his second straight shutout.
Can’t help but wonder how this game could have unfolded differently if two key moments in the first period went differently.
Max Brocklehurst and Conor Walton took minor penalties near the midway mark of the first and handed the Attack 5-on-3 power play for 1:07.
Owen Sound couldn’t score.
Key moment two…just after the power play expired. Ethan Kindree banged home a loose puck in the crease and the Bayshore crowd though the home side had a 1-0 lead. The play was challenged by the Windsor bench and disallowed after video review, due to goaltender interference on Newlove.
The Attack never did end up getting that first goal.
Next up for Owen Sound is a trip to Sarnia to take on the Sting on Wednesday evening. You can catch the game live on Attack Hockey on 89.3 CFOS.
COOK ARRIVES
Brody Cook make his Attack debut Saturday after joining the team in a trade with Kingston Frontenacs on Friday. He skated on a line with Max Delisle and Pierce Mbuyi.
‘A’ JACE
Owen Sound Attack true rookie forward Jace Voortman was named an assistant captain for Team Canada White at the U17 World Challenge, which gets underway Sunday in Oakville, Ont.
Voortman scored for Canada White during its 7-2 pre-tournament game loss to the United States.
Attack true rookie defenceman Max Fransen is also away at the U17 World Challenge. He’s on Canada Red, and picked up an assist in their 6-2 pre-tournament win over Czechia Friday.
