The Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey is holding a fundraising gala.
Danielle Bois, Community Relations and Fund Developer for the Women’s House says it’s set to be held at the Powerlink Building in Port Elgin on Saturday, October 17th.
“This year we’re doing a casino themed dinner, games, live and silent auction. It’s going to be a lot of fun. We’re very excited,” says Bois.
She says funds raised will go to programming which includes programs offered in-shelter and their outreach programs. That would include girls groups in the summer, week-long summer camps for either teenagers or pre-teens, group sessions for sexual assault survivors, spaces, food, transportation and fuel.
She hopes the event will raise $20,000.
The Women’s House serves about 800 women a year in its shelter and about 150 children.
They also manage a 24/hr crisis line. “That can get upwards of almost 2,000 calls a year,” says Bois.
She adds, “As far as human trafficking victims, not only women but the youngest person we have served was 11 years old. So being able to help fund these programs would really benefit our community.”
They have a shelter in Kincardine as well as three second-stage housing units as part of their program. Those are in Kincardine, Port Elgin and Wiarton, and there’s a third-stage housing unit in Owen Sound.
“We have units for human trafficking victims and we also have units for those fleeing domestic violence,” says Bois.
