West Grey council directed staff during its Sept. 29 meeting to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Durham Thundercats to build a new dressing room at the Durham Community Centre.
Council received a delegation from the Thundercats in August regarding a proposal to construct a dressing room addition on the east side of the facility.
Council requested that final design requirements be approved by staff, that the full cost of the project be borne by the Durham Thundercats, and that all additions or improvements resulting from the project become the property of the Municipality of West Grey.
The proposed addition is 1,074 square feet and would include a dressing room, shower room, washroom, mechanical and equipment room, coatroom, and office space.
Staff raised concerns about the original location and design. The east side of the centre experiences significant snow accumulation, meaning any addition must properly address snow loading, drainage, roof design, and access.
Staff are also concerned the current design could hinder future renovations. The east side of the facility is about 220 feet long, and the configuration of a new addition could limit future opportunities to expand or improve dressing room facilities.
