The ice at the Euphrasia Memorial Community Centre in Rocklyn will not open for the 2026-27 season following additional testing.
Grey Highlands council approved $90,000 for remediation on August 20, but a professional assessment has found that mould remediation is only the beginning.
Other problems at the community centre include mould-impacted building materials, ventilation deficiencies, long-standing moisture-related deterioration, damaged insulation and fireproofing, and asbestos-containing materials requiring specialized handling and abatement.
The municipality has also been advised that the current conditions stem from long-standing building and moisture issues that have developed over many years. Consultants emphasized that both the affected materials and the underlying causes of deterioration must be addressed.
While final consultant reports and detailed cost estimates are still being completed, current information indicates the work will exceed $90,000 and take a considerable amount of time to complete safely and properly.
