Grey Bruce OPP are reminding drivers to exercise extra caution as students return to school today.
They say, with increased pedestrian and school bus traffic in communities throughout the county, drivers are urged to slow down, stay alert, and follow all laws designed to protect children travelling to and from school.
Drivers are reminded to:
Stop for school buses when overhead red lights are flashing and the stop arm is activated.
Watch for children crossing roadways, particularly near schools, bus stops, and designated crosswalks.
Obey crossing guards and follow their directions at all times.
Reduce speed in school zones and residential neighbourhoods.
Eliminate distractions and remain focused on the road.
OPP say, “Children can be unpredictable and may not always recognize the dangers associated with traffic. Drivers play a critical role in ensuring students arrive at school and return home safely each day.”
They say throughout today and over the coming weeks, members of the Grey Bruce OPP will be conducting targeted enforcement focused on school bus offences, speeding, pedestrian safety, and compliance with crossing guards. Officers will be providing increased patrols in school zones and other areas where children are travelling.
OPP note, “Failing to stop for a school bus or disobeying crossing guard directions can result in significant fines and penalties. More importantly, these offences place children at unnecessary risk.”
