The Bruce County Public Library is joining a book club initiative that was started by an international musician and author.
The library, and its 17 branches, are joining the Laufey Book Club.
The initiative was started by Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter Laufey, who is also a New York Times Bestselling author for her children’s book Mei Mei the Bunny.
“Her jazz music is introducing people to music they may have not experienced before, and she’s also used her platform to engage with reading and literacy,” said library director Brooke McLean.
She’s also known as a strong advocate for public libraries, and was named the American Library Association’s Library Card Sign-up ambassador.
With Bruce County Public Library taking part in the book club initiative, local branches are celebrating A Very Laufey Day, which encourages youth to sign up for a library card.
“It attracts people to come to the library, get the Laufey Day card, and then find out what else we have to offer that they may not think of,” said McLean.
Starting on Sunday, teen readers can go to their library and choose to get a new, exclusive Laufey Book Club library card.
“We are the only one in Canada that is participating in this initiative, which is very exciting for us to have applied and to be able to bring this to Bruce County.”
It also gives cardholders the same access to the library’s materials and resources.
That includes the new Teen Advisory Group (TAG), which helps advise the library with programming and collections, to volunteering opportunities.
BCPL also has collections of graphic novels, Young Adult fiction and non-fiction books, and the Library of Things, where cardholders can check out everything from binoculars to snowshoes.
Taking part in the Laufey Book Club is one of many ways that the Bruce County Public Library is working to provide unique opportunities to through engagement.
