As summer camps wind down for the summer all across the province, the revelation that a camp counsellor in Kawartha Lakes has pleaded guilty to assaulting two children known to him.
The counsellor charged is also a Durham region police officer.
And to make matters worse, there is no provincial legislation requiring camps to screen staff that work with children – no requirement for criminal record checks or more extensive vulnerable sector checks from employees.
The Ontario Camps Association does require accredited members to conduct checks – but membership in the OCA is voluntary.
