Brockton may take a look at a licensing system for short-term accommodations.
A motion from Mayor Chris Peabody will be discussed and voted on during Brockton council’s meeting Tuesday evening, which directs staff to prepare a report regarding the potential implementation of “a short-term accommodation licensing regime” in the municipality.
The staff report would include information about a licensing fee to support enforcement and administration of a short-term accommodation licensing system, if Brockton were to pursue it. Fire and safety inspection requirements, and other information would also be outlined, according to Peabody’s motion.
Dozens of municipalities in Ontario have implemented licensing systems and enhanced regulations for AirBNBs and other short-term rental (STR) properties in recent years. Typically, they require property owners to pay an annual licensing fee, complete compliance inspections and restrict STRs to an owner’s primary dwelling.
Brockton council will discuss the motion for a staff report at it’s meeting tonight (Tuesday) at 7 p.m.
