If you own a business, Huron County’s Chamber of Commerce wants to know how the escalating trade war with the U.S. is affecting you.
The trade dispute with the southern neighbour began in February of 2025, when U-S President Donald Trump imposed 25 per cent tariffs of a number of goods entering his country from Canada and Mexico.
Additional tariffs were introduced in the weeks and months following the initial round of duties, with Canada responding with in-kind tariffs on a number of American products, and bans of American alcohol in several provinces.
The booze ban prompted another round of proposed tariffs by Trump, set to take effect August 19th.
The Huron Chamber of Commerce is looking for feedback from local businesses on how the upcoming tariffs could affect them.
Affected products of the newly proposed tariffs include:
- Raw hides, furs
- Plastics, rubber packaging
- Wood, lumber
- Pulp, paper
- Industrial equipment
- Toys, games
- Glass containers
“We hope these tariffs never take effect, but businesses cannot simply ignore an announcement of this scale,” said Colin Carmichael, Executive Director of the Huron Chamber of Commerce.
“We need to understand where Huron County businesses may be exposed, directly or through their customers and supply chains, so that local concerns can be represented clearly in the discussions taking place provincially and nationally.”
In a news release, the Chamber says, “information submitted through the form below will help the Chamber identify local concerns and inform its work with the Ontario and Canadian chambers, governments and economic development partners.”
