Meaford firefighters say no one was injured in a large residential fire Tuesday evening.
They say they responded to a report of a structure fire on Nelson Street just after 7:30 p.m.
The municipality says the fire started at a home on Nelson Street West and spread by wind to the next home to its East. The initial home was occupied at the time, and residents quickly got out.
They say the spread was due to wind conditions and was not related to dry weather conditions.
The Inter Township Fire Department was called at the time of the initial dispatch. The Town of The Blue Mountains Fire Department and Inter Township Derby firefighters were called at approximately 8:30 p.m. to provide mutual support. Grey Highlands Fire Department was later stationed at the Meaford Fire Hall on standby to maintain emergency response coverage for the community while crews remained engaged at the incident.
They say everyone made it out of the structures safely.
Over 35 firefighters responded to assist.
The fire at the second home was declared under control at roughly 11:30 p.m. The fire at the initial site of the blaze was declared under control at approximately 1:04 a.m. on July 22.
The Meaford Fire Department says, “We would like to thank everyone involved with assisting us: Municipality of Meaford, Hydro One, Ontario Provincial Police – West Region, Grey County EMS, Inter Township Fire Department Serving Georgian Bluffs and Meaford, Town of Blue Mountains Fire Department and Grey Highlands Fire & Emergency Services- who staffed our fire hall while all of our trucks responded.”
They’re also thanking the residents and businesses who donated food and drinks to fire crews during the response.
The fire department says the cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.
