Some heroes wear capes, others drive Sea-Doos.
A Kitchener woman is thankful to be safe and alive, after two people rescued her from a scary incident in the water off Saugeen Beach this past weekend.
Zelia Sozinho, 60, was cottaging in the area and on Sunday she decided to enjoy the water, taking her pool tube out into the waves as her husband went for a walk on the beach.
However, wind and waves slowly pulled her away from shore, eventually too far out.
“I was trying to kick, trying to hold on, tried to paddle with one hand and still hold on, I felt like I was going fall out of the doughnut hole,” says Sozinho. “I was out there for 45 minutes to an hour”
She says she didn’t see any boats or personal watercrafts around where she was stranded.
And only the pool tube was keeping Sozinho afloat. She says she can’t swim, and was not wearing a life jacket when she drifted out into the waters of Lake Huron off Saugeen Beach.
Thankfully, help arrived. She says Shawn, 49, and his nine-year-old son Bryce spotted her while they were driving on their Sea-Doo.
First, they tried pulling her along with a rope but that didn’t work. And then Sozinho boarded the personal watercraft and was brought back safely to shore.
“These people are angels, good samaritans,” says Sozinho. “I got lucky. Today, I got lucky.”
