The Town of Bracebridge will replace the Purbrook Road bridge this summer, an important piece of infrastructure serving residents and seasonal properties in the area.
Following a 2024 inspection, the existing bridge, now more than 100 years old, was identified as being in poor condition and at the end of its service life. The structure currently operates under a 15-tonne load restriction and requires full replacement to ensure continued safety and reliability.
Construction is anticipated to begin in July 2026, with completion by the end of October.
Innovative Approach to Reduce Impacts
The Town will use an innovative construction method that allows the existing bridge to remain in place while a new structure is built over and behind it. This approach reduces construction time, minimizes environmental disruption to McKay Creek and surrounding wetlands, and limits impacts to residents and road users.
The new bridge will be constructed using prefabricated components designed to meet modern highway loading standards, improving long-term durability and performance.
What Residents Can Expect
Purbrook Road is a dead-end rural road that services approximately 140 properties. During construction:
- Overnight full road closures will be required at key stages (including for emergency services);
- Outside of closures, temporary access through the construction zone will be maintained;
- Delays should be expected, and residents are encouraged to plan ahead; and
- Night work may occur during certain phases to reduce daytime impacts.
The Town is working closely with emergency services, waste collection, and school transportation providers to maintain service levels throughout construction.
The Town of Bracebridge will provide updates to residents throughout the construction process to ensure they are aware of timelines and impacts.
