Upgrades are planned to Saugeen First Nation’s baseball diamonds and pow wow grounds, and a generous donation came in to help kick off the project.
Roote’s Gas Bar provided a $100,000 donation this week to support the improvements, which will include drainage enhancements and an expanded pow wow grounds space, as well as several upgrades for the baseball diamonds.
Saugeen First Nation Business Coordinator Brittany Roote says a new grandstand will be installed facing the ball diamonds. New dugout covers, pitching bullpen areas and walking paths are also part of the planned improvements.
“These upgrades came directly from community feedback and reflect key priorities around improving shared spaces that support recreation, connection, and community pride. This isn’t just about physical improvements — it’s about investing in community wellbeing, creating opportunities for economic growth and future bookings on the Nation, and breaking down barriers between communities,” Roote says. “Recreation is especially important for youth in both Saugeen First Nation and Saugeen Shores.”
The baseball diamonds and pow wow grounds at Saugeen are located near the James Mason Recreation Centre. Roote says site work will be happening over the next few weeks.
She says a fundraising campaign has been launched to help finance the work. For more information about how to make a donation, you can contact Roote at brittany.roote@saugeen.org.
