Goderich council will be looking to amend the animal control by-law at its next meeting, to add the enforcement guidelines for allowing backyard hens.
Staff brought a report forward with recommendations for options to allow hens within the town’s urban neighbourhoods.
Drafts will include recommendations on the number of hens permitted and setbacks for coops and other structures.
The current animal control by-law does not mention any rules allowing hens, but does have guidelines for domesticated pigeons.
Options would also prohibit owning roosters, and would have rules for sanitation and feed storage requirements.
The report submitted for Monday’s council meeting says that the animal control by-law will be brought forward for the next council meeting on May 25th.
