Grey Highlands council will decide this week if bring-your-own-booze events will be permitted in the municipality.
Staff’s recommendation to council is to maintain the municipality’s current alcohol policy and not allow bring your own outdoor events in Grey Highlands. The recommendation will come before council during its meeting Wednesday.
Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative government recently changed provincial regulations around tailgate events — dubbed bring your own events by the province — to expand the scope beyond those in proximity with live sporting events.
As of April 30, a wide range of outdoor events such as movie screenings, street markets, concerts, fairs and others could apply to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission for a “bring-your-own” permit, allowing attendees who are legal drinking age to bring their own alcohol.
But, the provincial government left it up to each municipality to decide whether or not to allow these events locally. AGCO permits won’t be issued in municipalities where the events aren’t allowed. Grey Highlands staff are recommending council opt against allowing them.
