The South Bruce OPP is warning residents about a fraud involving scammers posing as local fire departments.
Police say individuals have reported receiving phone calls from people claiming to represent local fire services, asking for donations to support training, equipment, or fundraising efforts. In some cases, the caller ID may appear legitimate, adding to the deception.
Investigators emphasize that local fire departments do not solicit donations over the phone and instead rely on in-person fundraising events and community initiatives.
At least two incidents have been reported within the South Bruce OPP jurisdiction.
Residents are encouraged to remain cautious, avoid sharing personal or financial information, and hang up if they receive suspicious calls.
Anyone who believes they have been contacted or victimized is asked to contact police. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
Victims of fraud are also encouraged to report incidents to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, even if no financial loss occurred.
