Bruce County is encouraging homeowners to help address local housing needs through its Affordable Additional Residential Unit (ARU) Funding Program.
Now in its third year, the program offers up to $50,000 per approved applicant, covering as much as 75 per cent of construction costs for creating a secondary residential unit. This could include basement apartments, additions, or even detached units on a property.
The initiative is part of the County’s broader Build in Bruce housing strategy and aims to expand affordable housing options while supporting sustainable community growth.
Officials say the program can benefit a wide range of residents—from families looking to house aging parents or children, to homeowners interested in creating rental income while helping meet local demand.
To qualify, applicants must:
- Own and live in the home as their primary residence
- Be up to date on property taxes, mortgage, and insurance
- Rent the unit at or below established affordable rates for at least 10 years
Eligible renters must also meet income requirements, currently set at $67,200 or less annually.
Applications are being accepted on an ongoing basis until all available funding has been allocated.
