The City of Owen Sound is reminding residents to follow safety regulations for open-air burning as the warmer months approach.
Under the City’s Open Air Burning By-law, strict rules are in place to reduce fire risk, protect public safety, and limit nuisance caused by smoke and odour.
Burning yard waste, leaves, and household garbage is strictly prohibited within city limits. Only small, controlled fires for recreational, cooking, or ceremonial purposes are permitted.
Residents must ensure fires are supervised at all times and have proper extinguishing tools, such as a hose or fire extinguisher, readily available. Only clean, dry firewood or approved fuels may be used.
Additional restrictions apply across the city. Open-air burning is not allowed in the downtown core or on multi-residential properties, including apartments and townhouses. Fires must also be kept small, contained, and set back from buildings and property lines.
The City is also reminding residents to consider weather conditions, such as wind and dry conditions, before starting any fire to prevent the risk of spread.
Failure to comply with the by-law may result in fines or other enforcement action.
Residents are encouraged to use environmentally friendly alternatives for yard waste disposal, including municipal composting programs.
