The Ford government has tabled legislation to slash regional governments in several sectors including Simcoe County.
Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing unveiled the “Better Regional Governance Act” today in an effort to streamline government by slashing the number of councillors and appointing a regional chair who will have “strong chair powers” similar to strong mayor powers.
The effect in Simcoe County Council would cut the number of councillors in half to 16, plus a chair.
Simcoe County Warden Basil Clarke issued a statement in support of the measures.
The province didn’t say how much money it expects to save if the bill is adopted.
