Hanover police have charged a Toronto man in a credit card fraud investigation.
Police say on February 25th Hanover police received a report from a complainant in Saskatchewan indicating her credit card was unlawfully used that day to purchase eight
new truck tires at a car dealership in Hanover.
As a result, Hanover Police investigators confirmed a male suspect ordered the tires over the telephone using the stolen credit card and indicated he would attend the dealership to complete the transaction later in the week.
Late in the afternoon on February 27th, the suspect attended to the car dealership and was arrested by plainclothes members of the Hanover Police Service without incident.
Police say a search warrant was later executed on a U-Haul rental van driven by the suspect at the time of his arrest. They say officers recovered eight more tires that were confirmed to be purchased from a car dealership in Listowel and a second dealership in Elmira with stolen credit cards and fake Ontario driver’s licenses.
The 27-year-old man from Toronto was remanded into custody at his bail hearing and charged with Fraud Under $5000, unlawful use of a credit card and possession of property obtained by crime.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and note, investigators allege the suspect and others have committed similar crimes in other parts of Ontario.
Police are asking any car dealership or auto centre that has ordered and then sold high valued new truck tires over the telephone, only to determine after the fact that they were purchased with stolen credit cards to contact their local police and reference this investigation by Hanover police.
Hanover Police Service are reminding everyone, that tracking your credit card statement is important to detect unlawful purchases. They suggest having a notification sent to your mobile device any time a transaction is completed, if your bank offers that service.
