Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON) says human remains found near Tobermory are those of an Ancestor.
The remains were discovered in a remote area of the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula, near Tobermory on August 14th, 2025. According to OPP at the time, the remains were discovered by archaeologists and were collected and transported for further analysis.
SON’s Environment Office said Friday, March 13th, “Scientific testing, including radiocarbon analysis, has confirmed that the individual lived between 1426 and 1452. This confirms that the remains are those of a Saugeen Ojibway Nation Ancestor.”
The First Nation adds, “The disturbance of ancestral remains is a matter of deep spiritual and cultural importance for Saugeen Ojibway Nation. This confirmation affirms what our people have always known, that our ancestors have lived on and cared for these lands since time immemorial.”
