The mayor of West Grey says 2025 was an interesting year for the municipality.
Looking back on the past year, Kevin Eccles says 2025 started off with issues around frazzle ice and while it did cause concern, West Grey was able to keep the flooding to a minimum.
The municipality’s challenges grew with the possibility of the Durham Hospital closing down.
“That has happened a couple of times in the history of the Durham and District Hospital, but it was resolved and I think we have seen a path forward that we are certainly being able to work with the Ministry of Health and the South Bruce Grey hospital organization to be able to keep the Durham Hospital open and functioning and supplying the healthcare needs of the community at large. That was a big success,” says Eccles.
He adds they have also been working with the Town of Hanover to make lands available for employment opportunities.
“The land swap with Hanover is great for the growth of our communities combined,” says Eccles.
Over the past year, West Grey also was able to build a new bridge and repair two others. The work is expected to continue in the new year.
Ahead of the new year, Eccles is looking forward to officially unveiling the new police station in Durham, the ongoing redevelopment of Rockwood Terrace, and bringing high-speed internet to the community.
“Invest your tax dollars that are coming from the community to be put into a communal and cooperative use. We will continue to do that to make West Grey the ultimate choice of a place to live, work and grow in Grey County and certainly southern Ontario,” says Eccles.
