The three men accused in the 2023 death of Owen Sound restaurant owner Sharif Rahman have been extradited to Canada.
OPP say in a release, following an extradition process, on Thursday, December 11 th OPP and Owen Sound Police investigators escorted the three accused from the United Kingdom to Ontario. Assistance was provided by UK law enforcement members from the National Extradition Unit of the National Crime Agency and Police Scotland.
Back on on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at about 9:20 p.m., 44 year old Sharif Rahman of Owen Sound, was assaulted outside his restaurant the Curry House on 2nd Avenue East in downtown Owen Sound. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Thursday, August 24, 2023. As part of the investigation, police determined the suspects had fled the country, leading the OPP and Owen sound Police to work with international partners to coordinate overseas arrests.
On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, Scottish police arrested 24-year-old Robert Evans and 47-year-old Robert Busby Evans in Edinburgh, Scotland. On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, 54-year-old Barry Evans was arrested in Dalkeith, Scotland.
OPP say the three accused remain in custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on Friday, December 12, 2025.
Provincial police say, the investigation was conducted by the Owen Sound Police under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. Assistance was provided by the OPP West Region Crime Unit, OPP Forensic Identification Services and the OPP Regional Support Team. Support was also provided by Hanover Police Service, West Grey Police Service, Police Scotland, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), Ottawa Fugitive Apprehension Support Team and UK law enforcement members from the National Extradition Unit of the National Crime Agency.
A release adds, “The Owen Sound Police Service and the OPP would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Owen Sound community and neighbouring jurisdictions for their patience and continued support as this investigation has continued. We are aware of the impact this investigation has had on the victim’s family and the local community. We are also deeply grateful to everyone who came forward with information to assist police during the investigation.”
OPP say, “As this case is now before the courts, the OPP and OSPS cannot provide any additional information on the investigation.”
