A fundraiser is being held this week in Owen Sound in support of OSHaRE’s school lunch program.
Event Coordinator Deb Shaw says the United We Lunch event on Friday is inviting children and parents to the QYC Fun Factory in Owen Sound from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for attendees to learn about the importance nutrition plays in a child’s health, learning and well-being.
“It’s a hands-on event and it teaches the kids about nutrition, balanced lunches, but in a creative and engaging way. There is interactive stations where they learn how to do things like pack their own healthy lunches, the right mix of fruit, veggies, proteins, there are games and activities,” says Shaw.
Jackie Ralph from the Centre for Addition and Mental Health will also be in attendance to lead a discussion on empathy and understanding food security.
“I think they are up to somewhere around 260 school lunches a day that OSHaRE provides to area schools and they are delivered in brown paper bags. Children sometimes can be cruel, so she is going to teach them about why some children might need that and to be empathetic, and we are actually giving out brown paper bags that are branded for United We Lunch for kids to use so that they also have that as well,” says Shaw.
All the proceeds from the ticketed event will go to support OSHaRE’s community school lunch initiatives.
