A ‘hold and secure’ at a Hanover High School was lifted quickly Monday after police responded to an occurrence.
Hanover police Chief Chris Knoll tells Bayshore Broadcasting News, on Monday at about 12:30 in the afternoon, over the lunch hour, they received a number of reports about a male swinging a 2X4 piece of lumber on the grounds of John Deifenbaker Senior School.
As a result, there was a ‘hold and secure’ at the school. The Bluewater District School Board says it was a precaution, not a full lockdown, but a hold and secure which allows for most business in the school to continue as usual. The Board says it was lifted shortly afterwards, and that parents and guardians were notified.
Police Chief Knoll says the suspect is a 49 year old man of no fixed address and when officers arrived the man fled into a “green space” where he was arrested by police across from the school.
He is charged with ‘weapons dangerous to public peace,’ breach of release order and breach of undertaking.
Knoll says, “At no time did the investigation determine that the suspect attempted to gain entry to the school, and no one was hurt as a result of this incident.” The suspect is being held for a bail hearing Tuesday.
“We’re still looking at the motivation and the reasons why this transpired,” says Knoll.
