A group called “Save Georgian Bay” organized a protest flotilla in Meaford Saturday.
About 50 watercraft, all with protest signs made their feelings known at a massive drilling rig anchored off of Meaford.
The rig is owned by TC Energy, who in partnership with Saugeen Ojibway Nation and funding from the Ontario government is testing for the Ontario Pumped Storage Project. According to TC Energy and the province, it will store clean energy and provide enough energy for one million homes for a significant duration. The goals are to provide a domestic solution to meet future energy demands and enhance grid reliability. It is designed to be the largest of its kind in Canada.
Save Georgian Bay’s concerns are water quality and the unleashing of buried toxins among other things.
