Former Owen Sound councillor Ann Kelly has passed away.
Kelly served on Owen Sound City council from 1989-1997, and again from 2001-2003.
She was known for her lifelong commitment to serving her community, whether it was as a member of the local government, or through volunteering.
Kelly was recognized as the city’s Volunteer of the Year in 1992, and also received the Ontario June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Volunteerism in 2009.
Her dedication to the community is remembered through the many projects she helped out with, including the Festival of Northern Lights, the Bells of Christmas, Santa’s Workshop, and the Kiwanis.
She was also one of the first people to give 100 blood donations through the Red Cross.
Predeceased by her husband Allen, she leaves behind children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as a lifetime of good friends.
In a media release, Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy said, “Ann leaves behind a remarkable legacy of dedication and service to our community. Her thoughtful voice in The Sun Times, her strong leadership on City Council, and her ongoing advocacy for events like the Festival of Northern Lights have made a lasting impact. She truly embodied what it means to be a passionate and committed champion for Owen Sound.”
According to her obituary, a visitation will be held on Friday, September 5th at Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, with her celebration of life being held the next day. For those unable to attend, the event will be livestreamed. There will also be a reception held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Owen Sound.
To celebrate Kelly, flags will be lowered to half-mast in her honour from Tuesday, September 2nd until Monday, September 8th to coincide with her celebration of life.
