The Province of Ontario is investing $3.74-million in water infrastructure in West Grey to help advance new home construction.
The announcement came as a part of the provincial government’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, which is a stream of the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program.
Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Paul Vickers said in a media release that the need for more housing in the region is apparent, but before new homes can be built, there has to be infrastructure in place to support such growth.
The $3.74 million in funding will enable up to 633 homes in the community of Durham.
The MHIP includes historic investments in housing- and community-enabling infrastructure that will help municipalities deliver the core infrastructure needed, such as roads and water systems, to lay the foundation for new homes in communities across the province.
This round of funding brings the total number of homes enabled in Ontario through the MHIP to about 800,000. Investing in local infrastructure is part of the province’s more than $200 billion capital plan to build and improve transit, highways, hospitals, schools, and other critical public infrastructure, while strengthening the economy for the future.
West Grey Mayor Kevin Eccles said that the municipality is grateful to the provincial government for recognizing the need to solve local housing issues, and that the investment will go a long way to deliver solutions.
