Saugeen First Nation’s Powwow is coming up.
It’s set for this Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 9-10) at the James Mason Recreation Centre.
Chief Conrad Ritchie is inviting everyone to come to the event, saying, “I think it’s a good way to build connection with each other and showcase the culture.”
He adds, “Everybody’s welcome to the powwow and I would encourage that actually. I would encourage everybody to come and participate and see the different crafts and the culture and the song.”
He says, “It will showcase a lot of different dance styles and drumming styles. There will be a lot of other different Nations coming to attend that powwow. It’s multicultural because there’s all types of different backgrounds and families that come there.”
“I think it’s also a way to bridge the communities,” says Ritchie.
He says sometime in the future the First Nation is considering an expansion of the powwow and building more permanent grounds that would be able to accommodate for rainy weather and provide more space and be more practical for crowds.
The powwow has Grand Entries at Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. There will be traditional food vendors and craft vendors.
