Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced new gun control measures today, including a ban on some “assault-style” firearms, less than two weeks after the Nova Scotia tragedy that claimed 22 lives.
Under the new measures, the PM says effective immediately, it will now be illegal to buy, sell, transport, import or use military grade assault weapons in Canada.
He says they are banning 1500 models and variants of these firearms by way of regulations.
Trudeau says these weapons were designed with one purpose and one purpose only, “to kill the most amount of people in the shortest period of time.”
The PM says while most gun owners in the country are responsible, he adds “you don’t need an AR-15 to bring down a deer.”
He says there’s no place for these sorts of deadly firearms in Canada.
Trudeau says to protect law-abiding gun owners from criminal liability until they can comply with this new law, there will be a 2 year amnesty period and the government will legislate fair compensation.
Public Safety Minister Bill Blair has drawn up a list of firearms on the ban list, which includes weapons used in recent mass shootings both here in Canada and south of the border.
More to come…
