Provincial Police say a Huron-Kinloss resident was duped out of more than $200,000 in a cryptocurrency fraud.
South Bruce OPP officers responded to a report yesterday from a victim who received a bill from a utilities company higher than the anticipated amount.
According to police, the victim was led to believe there was a processing error and was instructed to make cryptocurrency transactions to rectify the issue.
“The whole interaction was fraudulent, and the victim lost approximately $215,000,” South Bruce OPP say in a release. “The investigation has been passed over to the South Bruce OPP Crime Unit.”
It’s the second significant financial loss from a crypto scam suffered by a victim in Bruce County recently. South Bruce OPP reported last month about a Kincardine resident who was duped out of about $100,000 after making a series of transactions to a cryptocurrency investment company he or she found through an online advertisement.
The OPP are urging you to be cautious when engaging in digital currency transactions and investments.
