The Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) has declared its Southgate trustee seat vacant after Janice Kaikkonen missed three consecutive board meetings.
The board approved declaring the seat vacant during a special regular meeting on Feb 4., referencing Section 228(1)(b) of The Education Act.
It says: “A trustee vacates their seat if they absent themselves, without being authorized by a resolution entered in the minutes, from three consecutive regular meetings of the board.”
School Board Communications Officer Jamie Pettit says a decision about how to fill the vacant seat will be determined at the next board meeting scheduled for Feb. 18.
The Bluewater Board will be able to fill the seat either through a by-election or appointment process.
The Education Act says the board must fill the vacant seat within 90 days.
Bayshore Broadcasting News has been unable to reach Kaikkonen for comment.
