The South Grey Bruce Youth Literacy Council is planning a new fundraiser this month to support its programs.
Program Coordinator Steven Morel says the upcoming Lit-Funk dance party event is set to go Oct. 19 from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Cargill Community Hall, which he says will feature the local eight-piece funk/soul band Higher FunKtion.
“We are going to have a little literacy based game throughout the evening,” says Morel. “Then also hopefully a 50/50 raffle, and then we will have a quiet room with more information about what we do.”
He says the funds raised will go into their resource centre in Hanover and support their tutoring and learning assistance services.
“We are a volunteer based organization that provides one-on-one literacy and numeracy tutoring for those kids who are falling behind, which seems to be even more need since the pandemic days,” says Morel.
He adds this event marks the return to live fundaisers for the organization.
“We wanted to do something that was closer to the western side of the very vast area that we cover, which goes all the way to Markdale and Flesherton in the east and then right out to the coast, we have learners in Kincardine and Port Elgin,” says Morel.
If the event is well received, Morel hopes they could bring it back as a regular fundraiser.
