Grey Highlands is making portable toilets accessible year-round at 10 locations in the community.
Council approved having these facilities available year-round during a meeting on Aug. 7.
This comes after council requested a feasibility report on making washroom facilities available year-round in March, and deferring a decision at a meeting in April until more information was made available.
Porta Potties are currently available at 14 sites on a seasonal basis from May to October each year, including at Eugenia Park, Feversham Park, Flesherton Ball Park, and Kimberley Hall.
A report from Manager of Operations for Parks and Recreation Mike Botelho says based on how many people visit parks in the municipality, it’s recommended year-round accessible porta potties be made available at Burnside Parkette, Eugenia Park, Feversham Park, Flesherton Ball Park, Flesherton Memorial Park, Kimberley Hall, King Edward Park, Priceville Ball Park, Rocklyn Ball Park, and Rotary Park Markdale.
“Portable toilets are a relatively inexpensive way to ensure adequate public restroom facilities are available for both residents and visitors, particularly in areas where permanent infrastructure is not available or practical. Portable toilets can be easily transported to different locations if necessary, and additional units may quickly be added if circumstances require,” says the report.
The portable toilet supplier will be responsible for all the cleaning, stocking and maintenance of the units.
Council approved including an additional cost of about $14,000 to provide access year-round, which will be considered as part of the 2025 budget.
