The third annual Walk for Courage fundraiser raised over $24,000 in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Grey Bruce.
The CMHA says the event saw an overwhelming turnout on July 20 as participants walked in memory of loved ones lost to suicide and to support those struggling with mental health issues. Local dignitaries also attended the event including Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MP Alex Ruff and MPP Rick Byers.
Additionally, the event included some new activities including a raffle and silent auction.
The funds raised from this year’s event blew past the set goal of $20,000, which will go to support the CMHA’s various programming including Let’s Talk, Mental Health First Aid, and SafeTALK, all geared towards suicide prevention.
CMHA Communications and Funding Manager Don Vail says the generosity and spirit of the community can be seen in this year’s results.
“Raising $24,165 reflects the collective effort to build a supportive environment for those affected by mental health and addiction issues,” says Vail. “This community stepped up again, demonstrating our shared commitment to mental health. It is truly inspiring to see everyone unite to support one another.”
The walk was organized by the Courage family after their oldest son Jeffrey died in 2019 by suicide.
Jeffrey’s father and Co-organizer of the event Greg Courage says, “the support from local businesses and individuals has been overwhelming. Their contributions have not only provided financial support but have also helped create an event that brings our community together in a meaningful way.”
