Georgian Bluffs is introducing a new by-law that allows residents to own backyard chickens.
Residents living in residential zones of the municipality are allowed to have up to six hens on properties larger than 0.2 hectares (0.5 acres). Roosters are not permitted under the new by-law.
The township says that backyard hens are for personal use only, so residents are not allowed to sell eggs or chickens, and are not allowed to do any home slaughtering.
Georgian Bluffs says that coops should be cozy but not crowded, and there is a setback requirement where coops are at least 10 metres from neighbouring homes and have no more than 10 square metres of space.
