The United Way of Perth-Huron says that they’re working to have housing options available to help those experiencing homelessness in the region.
In a presentation to Goderich town council, Executive Director Ryan Erb shared the vision for United Housing is to have sustainable non-profit housing in the region by 2030.
“What we’re hoping to do is to be obviously a developer of housing. That doesn’t mean that we’re building it ourselves. We’ll be partnering of course with contractors and sub-trades to make sure that we can build housing over time,” says Erb. “But we will have the competency in-house to operate that housing once it’s up and running.”
The hope is that by 2050 everyone in Huron and Perth will be living in suitable housing that is affordable.
Erb says that current projects in Goderich and Listowel were moving along well.
“The project in Listowel will be a downtown revitalization project, taking a building that we have purchased and converting the upper floors into ten units of housing, which have been vacant since the 1970s.”
Last year, the United Way Perth-Huron helped more than 1800 Goderich residents with different needs, including providing connection centres, providing emergency shelter, and helping local youth iwth extended supports.
