West Grey is not putting any money towards relocating an electric vehicle charger, which poses both safety and accessibility concerns.
Council approved not contributing any funds to relocate the charger at the Elmwood Community Centre during a meeting on June 4.
This comes after Brockton received grant funding in 2022 and 2023 to install level two EV chargers across various locations in the municipality, one of which for the Elmwood Community Centre.
At the same time, West Grey also received a grant to install EV chargers in the municipality, but did not do so for Elmwood as Brockton had received a higher funding amount for the project.
Concerns have been raised to both Brockton and West Grey staff over the current placing of the charger.
The current charger is installed partially on the grass and sidewalk in front of the community centre, with the wires stretching across the sidewalk and into the parking lot. The proposed relocation, would move the charger to the parking lot, removing the wires from crossing over the sidewalk.
On May 13, the Elmwood Community Centre Board passed a motion requesting Brockton and West Grey each put forward a max of $2,500 for the relocation.
Deputy Mayor Tom Hutchinson proposed denying the request to help fund the relocation.
“We stepped up to the plate to get it in there, did everything, we are not responsible for the placement of it. I don’t know why we should be supporting a relocation of it.”
Director of Legislative Services and Clerk Jamie Eckenswiller says the board can pursue other ways to attain the funding needed for the relocation.
