It’s International astronomy day Saturday, (May 18) and there will be a local opportunity to do some star gazing if the weather co-operates.
Owen Sound Sidewalk Astronomy is planning to set up a couple of telescopes at the Big Bay Dock near north Keppel.
They’ll be sharing views of the moon through their Dobsonian telescopes.
Owen Sound Sidewalk Astronomy’s Steve Ritchie says, “If you’ve never seen the moon through a telescope– it’s pretty impressive.”
You can check their Facebook page for updates about their plan for Saturday. There may also be more guest telescopes brought by other astronomers.
They also often host ‘sidewalk astronomy’ in Owen Sound and other parts of Grey Bruce, and will post on their Facebook page on days they plan to bring their telescopes out for anyone who is interested in looking through them.
The day has celebrated stargazing since it was started by a California astronomer in 1973 named Doug Berger who encouraged the setting up of telescopes in communities for passersby to stop and take a look through them.
