The Huron County Library shared feedback that it has received regarding free menstrual products.
In late 2022, the library was given $1,000 to fund a pilot project that offered free period supplies at the various branches, and the program was officially launched in October 2023.
The supplies were from both the Huron Women’s Shelter and Optimism Place Stratford.
In a report presented to council during the May 8th meeting, it was found that 90% of the feedback received was positive based on anecdotal and survey responses.
People who provided feedback said that they felt that the library was a good community location to provide the products, while also suggesting that community centres, government buildings, and schools should follow suit.
Many comments received expressed gratitude by those who used the products.
Survey responses and feedback came from library patrons of different age groups including seniors and pre-teens, those who are dealing with homelessness, and even included people who did not use the products.
The Period Poverty Task Force is continuing the project, meaning that menstrual products will continue to be available at all Huron County Library branches.
Between March 3rd and 9th, an education and product drive was held. Expenses for the pilot project were limited to the purchase of containers to hold the supplies.
