Brightshores Health System is providing Georgian College nursing students a hands-on learning experience after entering into an agreement.
Director of the Office of Research and Innovation Dr. Rebecca Brookham says they signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in December. It will give students in the new four-year nursing program a chance to learn more about research during their education.
“We are really excited about this MOU, we have been working on it for about close to a year now,” says Brookham. “There is opportunity for these students to be involved in research here at the hospital and get some minds interested in some of the local challenges that we have in coming up with local solutions.”
Nursing students will learn about how to conduct research and how it relates health care.
“It gives some some exposure and knowledge about how to search literature and to understand it, to inform their practice and also as they come up with clinical questions, how can they explore those and answer those,” says Brookham.
She adds the focus of the MOU is to develop a strong partnership between Brightshores and Georgian College and will be developing plans and programs for what the two organizations would like to tackle together.
“By combining our strengths, we aim to address healthcare challenges unique to our community and contribute to advancements in the field,” says Brookham.
She says nursing students will soon be taking part in this hands-on research education at Brightshores.
