Hanover police say their community has the highest number of surveillance camera registrations in Southwestern Ontario.
The program is facilitated through CamSafe.ca, which is a website that allows people to register their surveillance cameras in order to allow police access to footage that may help solve crimes.
Police Chief Christopher Knoll says the exact number of registered cameras is considered confidential at this point.
Registering your cameras on the site does not authorize police to access live feeds of the camera footage directly.
It just provides the contact information of the camera owner so police can ask to view footage if believe it will be helpful in an investigation.
Hanover police say in a release, “Video evidence will often help locate a missing person, identify suspects and witnesses in an unsolved case, locate stolen property and much more.”
They note, Hanover police investigators have been provided access to the site and continue to encourage those with surveillance cameras, doorbell cameras or any other cameras to register.
