The Province’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into an incident that occurred during an attempted traffic stop on Saugeen First Nation.
The SIU says in a statement to Bayshore Broadcasting News, that at approximately 10 p.m. on September 3rd 2023, an OPP officer was in the area of French Bay Road in Saugeen First Nation when an ATV came to his attention.
According to the SIU, the ATV driver had a female passenger, and they were pulling a trailer with another man on it.
The SIU says the officer attempted to stop the vehicle but did not succeed. A short time later, another officer tried to engage the ATV.
Shortly after, the ATV reportedly became involved in a collision and all three occupants were ejected. They were transported to the hospital in Southampton.
Grey Bruce OPP posted September 4th on social media saying two people face multiple charges following the incident.
The SIU says a 42-year-old man suffered serious injuries, and was airlifted to a London hospital.
It says four SIU investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials including police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
