At about 5:55pm on July 29, 2023 officers from the Collingwood and Blue Mountains Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an emergency call for service at Sunset Point in Collingwood for a woman in the water without a personal floatation device (PFD) who was reported to be in distress in deep water. It was also reported that her husband was entering the water to attempt to save her.
The first two officers arrived moments later. They saw the woman about 30 meters off shore in deep water screaming for help, there were strong currents that day and the female was struggling against the current. Officers immediately removed their police equipment and entered the water to rescue the woman. The woman’s husband was able to return to shore when he saw police entering the water to rescue his wife.
The officers reached the female and brought her to safety on the shore where she was reunited with her husband.
Thanks to the heroic actions of the officers a tragedy was averted, and the woman was reunited with her family.
The OPP would like to take this opportunity to remind the public to swim with a buddy, in a natural body of water like a river or lake conditions can change quickly and cause even experienced swimmers to become overwhelmed by the conditions. Wear a PFD, and when possible swim with another person or where there are trained lifeguards.
