A recent graduate of Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) is the latest to receive the annual $1,000 Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week (GBFW) Prize.
GBFW Coordinator Lorie Smith says in conjunction with the University of Guelph and OVC, Dr. Hannah Jansen received the prize on June 16 at their convocation and veterinary oath ceremony.
“We believe she is an exceptionally deserving recipient. She grew up in a cash crop and swine operation near Seaforth, Ontario. At first she became a registered nurse working in the U.S. and Ontario, but she recognized that she really missed the animals and the agricultural community. So she set her sights on veterinary school. Initially Hannah wanted to exclusively be a swine veterinarian but has since broadened her scope to all large animal veterinarian medicine,” says Smith.
She says Jansen is currently working at two practices, Southwestern Ontario Veterinary Services in Stratford and Blyth Veterinary Services, both of which assist Grey Bruce farming operations.
Smith says in 2008, GBFW decided it was important to give back to the agricultural community after producers have been supporting their programming for 57 years. This led to the creation of the annual $1,000 prize recognizing new veterinaries entering food animal practices serving Grey and Bruce counties.
“Its important to give back and the way in which to give back to them is to ensure that veterinarians coming out of OVC as large animal vets have an opportunity for a little bit of extra funding to support them in that endeavour to support our farmers in Grey and Bruce counties,” says Smith.
Jansen also created a video upon receiving this award, which can be found on YouTube here.
