Huron County has approved the tendering of a contract to do a risk assessment of climate change on local culverts and bridges.
The contract was approved for WSP during the County Council meeting on Wednesday.
Climate Change & Energy Specialist Derry Wallis gave a presentation to council sharing the importance of the work.
She shared with council that the work would cover all 210 of the county’s large culverts, as well as all 81 bridges.
The purpose of the risk assessment is to ensure the county’s infrastructure is able to withstand climate and weather issues such as heavy but less frequent rainfall that have been a growing trend over the past several years, which lead to extreme weather events such as flooding.
It would also help to prioritize repairs and upgrades to all large bridges and culverts to ensure that critical infrastructure is resilient to the impacts of climate change.
The work by WSP was approved at the cost of $25,720.
