Now that more people are spending time outside to enjoy summer activities, Grey Bruce Public Health is reminding residents of the rules when it comes to smoking and vaping.
GBPH says that smoking and vaping are not permitted near local sports fields, playgrounds, or skate parks.
The Smoke-Free Ontario Act prohibits smoking and vaping from not only enclosed public spaces but also designated outdoor spaces, in order to protect others from second-hand smoke.
In a media release, Physician Consultant Dr Rim Zayed says that the reminder comes as recreation facilities are now fully open following the pandemic.
She also warns that there is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke, particularly for children.
Grey Bruce Public Health says that tobacco enforcement officers, who are employed by the organization, are designated to enforce the regulations outlined in the Smoke-Free Ontario Act.
The Smoke-Free Ontario Act bans smoking or vaping:
– On children’s playgrounds and public areas within 20 metres of a playground
– On publicly owned sporting areas, their spectator areas, or public areas within 20 metres of these places
– On the grounds of community recreational facilities, such as arenas, pools, and gyms, and on public areas within 20 metres of those grounds
– Within 20 metres of a school property.
